Nearly all of us use some kind of personal care products every single day. If you’re like me, you have at least a half dozen body washes, shampoos, and facial cleansers in your shower. Research from the Environmental Working Group (EWG) says the average American uses around 15 different personal care products! And many of us use personal care products because we want lovely looking, soft, fresh skin, free of acne. But did you know that one of the best ways to achieve this is by using natural sugar scrubs?  They benefit your skin and body in a bunch of different ways. Let’s explore together!

Always chemical-free.

Did you know that the FDA doesn’t regulate the safety of personal care products before we use them? Nearly 90% of all personal care ingredients are not tested for safety. Scary!! Things like parabens, phthalates, and petrolatum saturate the majority of conventional personal care products – absorbing excess estrogen into the skin and causing major hormonal problems in both men and women. Natural sugar scrubs like those made by one of my favourite brands – Kosmatology – contain only organic, fair trade ingredients including unrefined sugar, no preservatives, and no animal products. Reverses the signs of aging.

Although we all know sugar is a no-no when it comes to putting it in our bodies, it’s can transform our skin when used on our bodies.  An amazing source of glycolic acid, an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA), sugar helps encourage the growth of new skin cells, reveals fresher, younger-looking skin, helps to even out skin tone, and even treats sun-damaged skin too! Sugar’s small particles make an excellent topical exfoliant, increasing blood circulation and collagen product, and removing dead surface skin cells that hold pollution, dirt, and excess oils known to clog pores.

Total body beautifying.

Natural sugar scrubs can soften even the toughest skin. Give yourself a pedicure! Use it on calluses, or on the dry tough skin on your heels. It is gentle yet abrasive enough to work deep into tired feet and helps to moisturize the heels – keeping them soft and smooth. Sugar naturally draws moisture from the air into the skin, helping to naturally moisture while it exfoliates. You can also use it on dry, cracked elbows and knees!
