With so much focus these days on what we put into our bodies, it might be easy to forget that what we put on our bodies is equally as important. The next time you’re in the shower take a peek at the ingredients in your body wash, shampoo, and conditioner. You might wonder what all those ingredients you can barely pronounce are. Body care products are often loaded with tons of harmful ingredients that get absorbed through the skin.

Chemical Free.

Commercial soaps are loaded with chemicals, dyes, and can dry out the skin with long-term exposure – even causing allergic reactions and irritation because they strip the skin of it’s natural moisture. Sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) or similar detergent compounds can be found in most personal care products, including toothpaste. Currently, it is listed as “harmful” or “toxic” on Canada’s Domestic Substance List. Then there’s toxins like parabens and phthalates (for fragrance) that have been shown to mess with hormone levels and disrupt estrogen levels. One of my favourite natural soaps is made by Pretty Suds Soap Co. and contains only botanical ingredients and is 100% vegan!

Pro-Sustainability and Community.

Natural soap making is eco-friendly because it supports local and sustainable practices, and contributes very little to our carbon footprint. Support local soap makers who are not only artisans of the craft, but who provide a fresher, healthier alternative to conventional soaps. Natural soaps aren’t made by machines controlled by companies only interested in profit, but instead by members of your own community who produce with love and care.

Nourishing for the Skin.

Natural soaps don’t strip your skin of it’s moisture and help to replenish the body’s oil balance leaving your skin softer and healthier. Many handmade soaps use olive oil, coconut oil, palm oil, and jojoba oil which help to repair and replenish the skin and balance PH levels. And natural soaps use essential oils instead of overpowering fake fragrances. I love the subtlety of Pretty Suds Soap Co. soaps. They use fresh lavender buds and high quality essential oils that provide relaxing and calming aromatherapy benefits. People with sensitive skin can sometimes only use natural soap because it doesn’t irritate like regular soap.
