They might be teeny tiny, but chia seeds pack an incredible health benefits punch! Native to South America, chia seeds have been a staple food since the Aztec and Mayan days. The benefits of chia seeds are especially important for women’s health. Loaded with fiber, protein, Omega-3 fatty acids and tons of micronutrients, it’s easy to see why you should start incorporating them into your diet today! One of my go-to brands is Salba Chia. They offer fresh, organically grown, non-GMO seeds that I love sprinkling on salads, yogurt, and even in soups!

Jam-Packed with Nutrients!

A typical ounce of chia seeds contains approximately 10 grams of fiber, 4 grams of protein, and 10 grams of fat with about 4-5 grams deriving from Omega-3s. They’re also packed with calcium, manganese, magnesium, phosphorus, and a fair amount of zinc, potassium, and B vitamins.

Excellent Source of Omega-3s

Although, many think that fish is the best and only source of Omega-3s, chia seeds actually contain more Omega-3s gram for gram. And in fact, chia seeds have more Omegas than even flax seeds, plus you don’t have to grind up chia seeds to release the nutritional benefits like you do with flax seeds. The Omegas in chia seeds help to reduce inflammation, are great for heart health, lower blood pressure and fat levels, help reduce the symptoms of menstrual pain, can protect against arthritis and osteoporosis, and boost mood!

Tons of Antioxidants!

The best source of antioxidants is food – hands down – and chia seeds are loaded with them. Antioxidants fight against free radicals which can damage cellular integrity and speed up the aging process. Free radicals have also been shown to contribute to the onset of various diseases like cancer. A few studies even argue that chia seeds have more antioxidants than blueberries!

Keep Bones Healthy and Strong

As women age, our estrogen levels dramatically drop and this can lead to serious bone loss and increase risk of developing osteoporosis. It’s important for women to get enough calcium and magnesium in our diets early on to prevent bone loss later in life. Chia seeds are high in the nutrients critical for bone health – calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus. In fact, gram for gram, chia seeds have more of these nutrients than many dairy products. And if you’re vegan, chia seeds are a great calcium replacement.
