Your body has a built in temperature regulator that triggers sweating when you need to cool down. For this reason, antiperspirants are popular because they just essentially prevent your glands from secreting sweat so you stay dry. But the problem here is that sweating is a critical part of the detoxification process, so we don’t want to inhibit it. Yet, at the same time, how do we combat unpleasant odors that can be embarrassing while still making the healthiest choice? Let’s explore a few options together.

Antiperspirants are full of chemicals.

Your average antiperspirant contains aluminum, parabens, and phthalates – among other things. Aluminum terrifies me! In addition to being directly linked to Alzheimer’s disease, it has also been known to cause a variety of cancers, seizures, and kidney problems. Parabens have been attributed to endocrine disruption, immune problems, and reproductive disorders, while phthalates can cause birth defects and infertility. Plus when these toxins close or clog pores in order to prevent sweating a buildup of sweat bacteria occurs, which is – ironically – the underlying cause of bad odor. Be kind to the environment.

Deodorant sprays cause air and water pollution, and are terrible for the environment because, like hairsprays, they contain the highest amount of VOCs (volatile organic compounds). VOCs rapidly evaporate into the air, contributing to the formation of smog and other ozone damaging concentrations. Just imagine how conventional deodorants are polluting your body!

Thyroid damage.

The thyroid impacts nearly every metabolic process in the human body and is a mecca for hormone regulation. Mess with your thyroid, and you’re in big trouble! Triclosan is an antimicrobial that kills bacteria and fungus, and is commonly found in many conventional deodorants. This pesticide is also a carcinogen and has been shown to cause endocrine problems, immune disorders, cancer, and especially inhibits healthy thyroid function. You’ll want to be especially cautious if you have a family history of thyroid dysfunction.

Natural ingredients promote healthier skin.

If you’re looking to maintain healthy skin, switching to natural deodorants is a must! Conventional products can irritate skin and prevent it from ‘breathing’ properly. Many natural deodorants contain ingredients like baking soda which neutralizes odor, witch hazel which evaporates sweat and soothes irritation, and essential oils that aid in preventing bacteria build up. You’ll be able to achieve similar benefits to those of conventional deodorants, but without exposure to the skin damaging ingredients.

Since I switched to natural deodorant, my underarms feel fresher and cleaner. I’m even able to skip a day because my glands are being nourished with healthier alternatives.
