Read any business article about the habits of ultra-successful people and you’ll notice that they all have one thing in common: they start their day with a powerful routine that prepares their brain and body for excellence. 

This is true for a very important reason: those first few hours of your morning determine how you’re going to feel and perform for the rest of the day. They also happen to be some of the most focused and creative.

So why would you dedicate that time to your inbox, which tends to be everyone ELSE’s agenda for your time, instead of the tasks that really matter? Or social media or other dull admin tasks?

Now, I’m not exactly what you’d call a morning person. But I still want to gain the same benefits in my own life, So I’ve developed a dinacharya— an Ayurvedic morning routine that maximizes time and optimizes performance— that I genuinely enjoy doing.

This inspires me to leap right out of bed in the morning, and give my creative projects my all before dealing with admin and meetings in the afternoons. And as a result, I feel spectacular afterwards too.

It’s important to mention that the most important element of this morning routine is meditation so if you only do one thing, try to make it this one. Brush Your Teeth/Use The Bathroom

It might seem obvious, but it’s important.

Tongue Scraping

This is vital for removing toxins that have come out during sleep. Look for a copper tongue cleaner if you don’t have one yet  (copper is naturally antibacterial) and scrape 5-6 times until there is no more white ‘gunk’ on the scraper.

Oil Pulling

Take a tablespoon of raw coconut or sesame oil and swish it around in your mouth for 10-15 minutes. As you’re swishing, you can start to get ready and move through the next few steps of this routine.

Acupressure Mat

Step onto an acupressure mat and shift your weight from foot to foot, waking up your body. Personally, I like the Yantra Mat (available on Amazon).

Hot Water

As you’re swishing your coconut oil, go set up a kettle with hot water. When you’re ready, grab a mug and fill it with ⅔ hot water and ⅓ room temperature water. Drinking this will wake up your digestion and it’s highly detoxifying for your entire body too. You can add lemon if you have some on hand, but hot water is also great by itself.

Breath and Body Exercises

Next, go through some simple Ayurvedic breathing exercises to help prepare your body for meditation. See my detailed instructions for these exercises here. These only take 5-7 minutes and will get the oxygen, blood and lymph moving even if you don’t like to exercise.  


If you already have a meditation practice, go ahead and enjoy a session. If you don’t have a practice yet, no worries. Meditation is like any other skill in that it just requires a bit of training and some practice. Head to to learn.

This effective regimen gives you the energy and clarity you need to start your day deliciously by maximizing your time and combining multiple good-for-you habits into one easy routine. For best results, choose your favorite one, then build up from there.
